Amazing video shows man kitesurfing on flooded Cambs meadow

A Cambridgeshire man made the most of his daily exercise by kitesurfing the county’s flooded meadows.

Arnis Kusins, 36, originally from Latvia but now living in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, has been kitesurfing since 2016.

He said: “I originally started my water sports experience with traditional wave surfing. But since I live in this region, it is not often that I can go to the sea with a good swell.

“Three or four times a year is not enough for me. I want to do it at least once a week, and kitesurfing gives you that option.

He usually kitesurfing at sea, but recent flooding in Cambridgeshire and beyond has allowed him to practice his passion a little closer to home.

In recent weeks, Arnis has been kitesurfing on a flooded meadow in Portholme and Riverside Park in Huntingdon.

He said surfing the flooded areas, both located minutes from his home, was a “new experience” for him.

“It’s not often that our weather and floods combine,” he said.

“If there is flooding, it may not be windy or there may be wind, but the wind direction may be completely wrong. It is dangerous when the wind is blowing in the direction of power lines.

“It was the moment when all the points came together and I was able to give it a try.

He continued, “It’s great because you can do a kite session and then after five minutes you’re back home.”

“You don’t have to spend two hours or an hour to go to the seaside and the same to go back. “

Arnis said kitesurfing is a “very moving thing” for him and his life has changed since he first experienced it.

He said: “When you get on the water and start to control wind power and water power, it blows your mind.

“That’s why a lot of guys just can’t stop after they start. I know a lot of guys who started even after me who have just changed their lifestyle now.

But Arnis warned less experienced kitesurfers shouldn’t try to follow in his footsteps as it can be dangerous.

He said: “There are a lot of things – fast flowing rivers, power lines – so you have to be really comfortable staying in control.

“I have enough experience, I am local, I know this region very well.

“For people who want to try maybe in the future and don’t know this place or don’t have enough experience, then I would say don’t go out as it can be dangerous.”
